The Bahamas is made up of 700 islands, 30 of which are inhabited. Nassau is the capital city of The Bahamas, which can be found on Paradise Island, and is well known for its beaches, coral reefs, and perfect for snorkelling. Many years ago, this beautiful island was a base for pirates, rum-runners, and other culprits to stake out and conduct business: because of the clear shallow water and the accessibility to prime cargo passage. Pirates attracted the ships traveling with goods by shining lights into the sky as if it was a lighthouse. The captain, therefore, expects to find a safe harbor, however, due to the shallow waters, the ships would smash into the reefs, and the pirates steal the merchandise. Many ships ruined, and so the Spanish decided to fight back and destroyed the city in 1697. The rebuilding of the town was under Governor Nicholas Trott in honor of William Orange lll, who was the King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. William Orange lll belonged to a division of the House of Nassau and thus the name Nassau.
Today, Nassau has a mix of European architecture with a tropical bliss and has a population of 266,100 as of 2016. Its prime location, close to Florida and other Caribbean islands, makes it easily accessible to visitors.
There is so much history on this beautiful island Nassau, and so much to see. You will find colonial-style Government buildings, statues of Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus, the old prison, Fort Charlotte, and so many historical sites. How about getting your taste buds active? You will also find a chocolate factory at the Gray-Cliff Hotel, where you will see how they create their delicious sweets using products of the island. A distillery? Yes, this is at an old plantation where you will also find artifacts and a tour through-out the old mansion. This plantation tour will take you way back to when Christopher Columbus first set foot on the Bahamian shores.
Where else to get-a-way to, from all the historical sites and cultural orientation? The Beach! Relax on the beach, get some sun and sand on your feet at Blue Lagoon Island. This island is known for its turquoise water, lush vegetation, snorkelling at the coral reefs, birds, and fishes. There is so much to do in water sports: swimming with the dolphins, sea lions, and pigs, sailing around Nassau, enjoying the view from another angle, or doing nothing but relaxing and sipping on some tropical blend.
